Common species for indoors

Manihot Esculenta, commonly known as the yucca plant, is part of the community of plants that are best suited for their indoor and extremely low maintenance quality. Their resilience to weather, soil, water, and sunlight conditions and also being a source of environment regeneration is what makes them an ideal choice for the closed offices, apartments owing to the little care these yucca plant need.

What you should expect out of this reading

In the following text, you will have a complete guide on how yucca plants behave indoors and outdoors and how to care, use and grow a yucca plant.

yucca plant varieties

What is a yucca plant

Appearance

It is a plant with sword-like leaves that grow out in every direction from the main stem. Also, the images of a yucca plant you most commonly would see will be as described. Their sharpness has also earned them the name of a Spanish Sword.

Species count

They have around 40 species and according to different climates and regions, these species vary where some yucca plant will grow flowers at a certain time in the year while others will grow as combined stems.

Indoor and outdoor yucca plants

While some of the variants of yucca plants are fragrant but if we were to note a few important points on how to grow and care for an indoor yucca plant we can note the following guidelines.

How to plant indoor

The species that are commonly planted indoors are the Yucca Elephantipes. However, even the other species do have a similar set of protocols to have a proper care routine for yucca plant.

Growth process

The growth process can start from either seed, the roots of a yucca plant, and using offsets. A relatively easier and more sure shot way to grow a yucca plant is by using existing roots of a yucca plant. In this method, you dig the roots and cut an almost 3-inch root structure. After that, you keep those roots in a cool and dry place for approximately 2 days. Make sure they are placed in soil and in an area where indirect sunlight is received. These yucca plant roots will begin to grow in about 3 to 4 weeks.

Sunlight

The ideal sunlight condition to grow a yucca plant is a bright sunlit area where direct sunlight is not necessary. Also, make sure that it is planted in an open space where its sharp leaves do not harm anybody. This means that the ideal temperature for its growth would be between 13 and 27 degrees Celsius in summers and 7 to 8 degrees Celsius in winters.

Soil

Yucca plant usually is very soil resilient and does not require a particular yucca plant of soil. However soil containing moss and 50% organic substances is preferred but the only thing that needs to be considered is that the soil has to have a proper, well-drained system because excess water (which we will talk about in the next pointer) rots the yucca plant. You can learn more about the types of soils best for your planters here.

Water

Considering their resilience towards soil requirements, their water requirements are similar where they are extremely tolerant to drought-like conditions and do not require frequent watering. The yucca plant has to be watered only when the soil is dry which is only once of twice a week in summers and similar temperatures. In winters however, the watering frequency reduces even further.

Taking care of yucca plants after growth

The use of fertilizers is preferred if the plant is relatively new but an old yucca plant will not be needing that.

Pruning

The next procedure is probably the most important one for a yucca plant’s care, sustained growth and health, this procedure is known as pruning. The ideal time is to prune it just before the plant begins to grow. Now the time to prune is not fixed and can be done even before the flowering is complete where the stem is cut about 7 to 10 cm above the area of the stem.

Diseases / common problems and cures

  • During winters if the yucca plant turns dry, move it to a cooler place.
  • If the plant turns yellow, move it to a place with a good amount of indirect sunlight.
  • If Flay Mucus is experienced the spraying of insecticides would solve this problem.
  • If the plant does not grow upright, then move it to a smaller pot and make the soil around it sturdy enough to hold it.

How to plant outdoor

The first thing to consider is the space where the first step is to dig a space that is twice the size of the original yucca plant stem and then improve its base sturdiness by including gravel and sand.

The things to consider with yucca plant that is outdoor is the spread factor where areas surrounding the plant have to keep at a safe distance and height. Even though they add a great deal of finesse to the overall landscape but can be harmful as well due to their toxicity when in contact with their tips, for cats, dogs, and even humans.

Differences and similarities of indoor and outdoor yucca plants

These outdoor species, unlike the indoor species of yucca plant, spread in all directions at a bigger scale. As for these species along with many other species need variable amounts of sun. They do not entirely hate the sun but a substantial amount of direct or indirect sunlight is ideal. Similarly, the amount of water is the same where the main focus is on the drainage of the water as leaving them soggy would cause them to rot away due to excess moisture.

How to choose your perfect outdoor or indoor yucca plant

Even though they look great and appealing in formal settings but if some aspects are to be considered, they would improve the overall experience of owning and taking care of yucca plant. Also when choosing the pot for you yucca plant, go for a bigger based and heavier pot so that the weight of the stem and the leaves can be handled well. Prefer the species with leaves that are flexible, soft, and greener for the indoors and the outdoors would make a good spot for the more sturdy and pointy for their better visual appeal. However, do consider the size of the area where you wish to plant it because they tend to grow quite large in size hence could be a problem to manage.

Even though growing yucca plants outside is relatively easier than in the indoors where when planting it outdoors one should ensure a large enough area for its proper growth and care.

Conclusion:

Yucca plant can be an easy investment in terms of care and planting but when they outgrow their pot or space, they can be troublesome. They have proven to be a center point for rooms and spaces due to their built structure and shown properties of high resilience and flexibility. So, if the above-mentioned steps on how to grow and care for a yucca plant are followed and acted upon then it is a relatively less extensive plant to maintain and care for.
